Humility is the great catalyst to end all human suffering. To remain in a state of grace, through understanding one’s divine inheritance, being no greater or lesser than any others’ inheritance is to remain humble to one’s own condition concerning the many.
In March of my third year of college, I pranced about in a mini-skirt with boots, leggings, and a cute top to match. My hair was perfectly coiffed, my makeup was done just right, and I was smiling from the self-satisfaction that I looked good that day. My afternoon was spent in front of a camera helping to create a commercial for the college transfer program, and I was on top of the world.
I took a short break in the women’s restroom, and when I exited, I took a detour behind some buildings to the hall where my psychology courses were being taught. I heard footsteps falling behind me. As they drew near, I sped up, and the faster I walked, the faster the footsteps fell behind me. I took one subtle glance and saw a tall, rather brawny male figure closing in on me. He finally tapped my shoulder. We were both a little out of breath. Apparently, I let my skirt get caught up in my stockings while in the ladies’ room, and my underwear was showing from the back.
Courage is the moment when one faces fear. Triumph is the moment one comes out smelling like a rose. Humility, on the other hand, is a sense of wonder for all that transpires in recognition of the divine creator within and through us all.
